Low-carb protein bars are a minefield for keto dieters, because many people on the diet think that just being low in net carbs is good enough. Any bar that markets itself as low-carb is almost certainly a poor choice for keto. Yet, Amazon searches for keto bar return many such bars. This is definitely a problem.

Pure Protein bars are a perfect example of a horrible bar that somehow sells well on Amazon, presumably because some like the taste . Seeing as it looks like a candy bar and contains copious amounts of maltitol and sucralose, I cant say that I am surprised.

Its hard to imagine anything worse than a Quest Bar, but Pure Protein manages. It has less fiber and fat, and more artificial ingredients.

What To Look For In A Keto Snack Bar

  • Calories: The calorie count will be different between a snack bar and a meal replacement bar, so take note when making a selection. Generally speaking, snack bars should be under 200 calories per serving. Youâll want one that has enough calories to take the edge off your hunger and tide you over until your next meal or provide enough energy to get through an activity .
  • Macros: Macros are short for macronutrients, namely fat, protein, and carbohydrates. The macro breakdown of snack bars is an important consideration. For keto, carbs will need to be around 5%, protein around 20%, and fat to be around 75%. If youâre low-carb, youâll want carbs to be 10% to 30% of calories, although there is no set definition.
  • Features: Depending on your health goals, dietary restrictions, and food sensitivities or allergies, you may want to look for features, such as gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free.
  • Ingredients: A product may have all the features and macros youâre looking for, but itâs always a good idea to check the ingredient list to see how they achieved them. In general, itâs best to look for products without any artificial flavors and sweeteners.

The Good The Bad And The Hideous

My research included venturing deep into the underworld of low-carb protein bars, looking at best sellers on Amazon, and in the aisles of Whole Foods, Costco, Target and Walmart.

A lot of what I found disgusted me, frankly, and Im not going to be shy about it .

The good news? I also found some fantastic options that I am delighted to share with you.

What Common Sugar Alcohols Should I Avoid

Hungry Buddha Keto Bars you are a canvas

Malitol: This is the most common sweetener in sugar-free candies, and its considered to be the worst sugar alcohol. It actually has 2.5 cal per gram and a glycemic index of between 35 and 60. Its been known to reach a glycemic index of up to 65 in concentrated syrups, like those used in many Atkins diet foods. Not to be consumed on a regular basis! Avoid this, but if you must, add about 50% of Malitol carbs into your net carb count. Erythritol: With a glycemic index of zero and just .2 cal per gram, erythritol is by far the best option of the sugar alcohols. I still prefer natural zero calorie alternatives such as Stevia and Monk Fruit. Allulose: Allulose is a new synthetic sugar that was created by QUEST Nutrition. Theyve dubbed it a rare sugar. Its not clear what this means but thats how it is described on the back of some newer Quest Bars, such as the Hero Bar. Some consumers are reporting that it tastes good and is easy to digest, while others are saying its overrated. Given QUEST Nutritions poor track record, Im avoiding Allulose until its proven to be safe.

Good For Diabetics Or Not

The Hungry Buddha bars are low in carbs, therefore didnt cause a spike in my blood sugar as much as a regular granola bar would.

The extra protein that is usually in Keto bars is also an added bonus. If you are diabetic and also vegan, then they are a great option for you.

So the answer is a definitive yes.

The Hungry Buddha bars fit the bill for a healthy diabetic-friendly snack.

Check out another product review for some healthy snack options for diabetics. Cheese Whisps are one of my favourite diabetic-friendly snacks. They are a great replacement for potato chips.

The Hungry Buddha Chocolate Chip Bar

Sometimes when I review a product I try to always find something positive to say about the product. that was a definite struggle for this particular bar.

There were a few chocolate chips on the top but none inside of the bar and I didnt get any chocolate chip flavour at all. Again, it was very greasy.

I found the bar to be pretty flavourless. I tried to eat it but I couldnt finish it. I have no comparison as far as taste goes, perhaps cardboard. I hope that they improve this particular bar, as a chocolate chip low-carb bar would be nice.

What Are Keto Protein Bars

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carb diet. When your body’s carb intake is low enough, you’ll enter a state of ketosis, meaning your body will start burning through existing stores of fat for energy. So, keto protein bars are low in carbs and higher in fat, protein and fiber in order to keep you full and in ketosis. Here are a few ingredients that they commonly contain:

  • Almonds, cashews or other nuts
  • Coconut or coconut MCTs

Hungry Buddha Plant Based Keto Bars

Hungry Buddha Keto Bars Keto Certified by the Paleo Foundation

Hungry Buddha released brand new plant based Keto protein bars. I recently found a box at Costco so decided to give them a try. The box comes with two of their three flavours Chocolate Chip and Coconut Cocoa. The one missing is an Espresso Brownie which I would love to get my hands on.

The ingredients:

The ingredient list looks pretty good using sunflower seeds, tapioca fibre, chicory root fibre, pea protein, flax seeds, coconut oil and natural flavours. The bars are also sweetened with monk fruit juice concentrate . This is a fruit native to China and used because it is so much swetener than conventional sugar yet does not impact blood sugar in the same manner. The almost no impact on blood sugar is what helps keep these bars keto and makes them a delicious option for diabetics or those watching sugar intake. Using monk fruit is also a great option as it makes them stevia free. Not every enjoys the taste of stevia and stevia is actually in the ragweed family so if you are allergic to ragweed, you likley have some issues when it comes to stevia.

The taste:

The taste is good. Texture is soft and slightly on the drier side but not in a bad way. That’s likely due to the use of pea protein. You can taste the sunflower butter, the chocolate chips as well as the coconut making each flavour unqiue to the other.
