Dont Quit Carbs Cold Turkey

Here

Liz Weinandy, MPH, RDN, LD, lead outpatient dietitian for nutrition services at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, recommended that you dont go cold turkey and drop all of the carbs right away.

Shifting into ketosis rapidly can be uncomfortable and hard to do. A gradual transition is more ideal, according to Weinandy.

She recommended dropping your carbs by 25 grams a day until you reach your goal.

A big reason that people feel bad at the beginning of a diet is keto flu, said Weinandy.

When we lower carbs, theres a diuretic effect that causes a rapid shift in electrolyte balance.

As the body gets adjusted to burning fat for fuel, it can leave a person feeling tired, irritable, and dizzy.

To counteract these symptoms, Weinandy suggested adding about 2,000 milligrams of sodium about a teaspoon of table salt to meals each day.

However, people with high blood pressure should consult their doctor before doing this, she advised.

Dehydration is responsible for some of the symptoms of keto flu, including fatigue and dizziness.

Feeling thirsty and having a dry mouth are also signs of dehydration.

To avoid dehydration, Robin Foroutan, MS, RDN, HHC, an integrative medicine dietitian and a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recommends 2 liters of water per day.

What Is The Keto Diet

Transitioning out of the keto diet has its benefits. One, the keto diet generally advises eating 20 to 50 grams of net carbohydrates per day. To meet that goal, people have to cut out even healthy sources of carbs, like whole grains, legumes, starchy vegetables, fruit, and most dairy . Because of this restriction, many people will find that they cant stay on keto for long anyway. Whats more, because there is such a long list of banned foods on keto, long-term ketogenic diets can result in nutritional deficiencies, says Keene.

It will be an adjustment period, but you can approach it in a smart way. If you get to your health or weight goal on keto then jump right back into the way you were eating , you will snap back right to where you started, says Alyssa Tucci, RDN, nutrition manager at Virtual Health Partners in New York City. As you transition off the ketogenic diet, start to slowly decrease your fat intake while upping your intake of lean proteins, vegetables, and wholesome carbohydrates, like fresh fruit, whole grains, and beans, she says. White refined grains and sugars should still be limited.

While you should still eat the healthy fats you’ve become accustomed to , decreasing the amount is key, otherwise you may wind up eating an excess of calories. Youll no longer be imperiling your cholesterol by covering a chicken breast in butter just to meet your fat quota, for instance.

Ketosis is a state where your body burns fat instead of glucose for energy, making it a popular condition for weight loss. Your body enters ketosis when you follow a keto diet of very low carb and high fat intake. However, its also a difficult state to maintain and can take several weeks of dieting to enter. If youve slipped out of ketosis, the quickest way to re-enter it is with a 36-hour fast to burn off any glucose in your body. You can also get back into ketosis a bit slower by sticking to a strict keto diet for a few days.

Simple Tips To Help You Get Back On Keto After A Break

WHAT I EAT IN A DAY KETO! (after falling off track) | VLOG
  • For people following a strict meal plan such as the keto diet, the holidays can be a difficult time to stay on track.
  • But holiday breaks dont have to be a permanent setback.
  • Instead of cutting out carbs totally again, nutritionists say easing back into ketosis after a break is typically the healthiest way to get back on this diet.

During the holidays, did you decide to take a short break from following a diet that lasted a little longer than you originally intended?

Maybe you only meant to ease up for a couple of days, but then Aunt Doris offered you another piece of her famous pecan pie and the next thing you knew those few days became a few weeks, the holidays were over, and youd gained more weight than you realized.

If this scenario sounds familiar, youre not alone. Holiday weight gain is a challenge for many people. In fact, the average person will gain about a pound during the season.

But taking a break from following a keto diet to celebrate the holidays doesnt have to be a permanent setback.

In fact, nutritionists say these seven tips can help get you back into ketosis in no time.

Dana Hunnes, senior dietitian at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center and an adjunct assistant professor at the Fielding School of Public Health, said the most important tip she can give is to let go of a perfectionist mind-set.

In fact, having an all-or-nothing attitude is why many people yo-yo diet, she said.

Remind Yourself Of Your Motivation

This is why I recommend writing down your motivations for losing weight. Do this when you start your journey, and add to the list as you go. Keep it in an accessible place.

And now is a perfect time to look at your list. Take 5 minutes to read through the list and visualize success. Dont just read it, but feel it.

You have goals, and despite any setback, what you do RIGHT NOW is the only thing you have control over to reach those goals.

How To Cheat On A Ketogenic Diet The Right Way

Cheat days have become a popular theme with many diets and for good reason. In fact, many experts have embraced diet cheats as a way to teach a more balanced approach to healthy eating.

Besides the fact that we are humans, not robots, and it can feel pretty impossible to stick to your keto diet perfectly, research says there may actually be some benefits to going off your diet. Including a strategic diet cheat may have some psychological benefits like reduced cravings and the ability to stick to your meal plan better overall .

Done right, cheating on your diet can help you stay motivated, and teach you how to have moderation as you build sustainable long-term health habits. Plus who doesnt want to learn how to have their cake and eat it too?

Heres how to include cheats without going off the rails.

Getting Back Into Ketosis

The reason its so hard to get back on keto once youve significantly fallen off the wagon is that you will have to go through the keto flu again. Its unpleasant and you feel like crap for a good 3-5 days depending on how your body responds to running on ketones. Supposedly once youre fat-adapted its easier for your body to jump back into ketosis, but I think Ive eaten enough sugar and carbs now that my body is fighting me on it.

To get back on track, Im going back to the basics and using Melissa Sevignys free 3 Day Keto Kickstart Menu Plan! Her blog is one I often referred to when I first began keto and her cookbook is wonderful! If you want to join me, Id love to do this journey together! Accountability is key for me.

What I Am Going To Do Differently This Time

Now that I am back on keto, and have read more about ketoto understand what I did wrong last time, I will be making some adjustments.

This time I am going to focus more on eating a variety ofhealthy vegetables.

Last time I did keto I often chose to skip on a secondhelping of vegetables at dinner so I had enough carbs left for a keto treat.

Since I am not counting carbs in non-starchy vegetablesthis time, eating more should be easier.

I will still enjoy the occasional keto fast food meal, and some keto treats too though.

While keto treats and keto fast food options shouldnt be astaple in your keto diet, allowing yourself these treats once in a while doesmake it easier to stick with the keto diet.

I also am not going to do lazy keto this time.

    What is lazy keto?

Lazy keto is when you focus only on your carb intake andignore fat, protein, and calories, which is what had happened to me towards theend of my time on keto last time.

I often ate way too many calories and didnt really payattention to the fat or protein. Then Iwondered why am I not losing weight on keto anymore?

Now I realize that this was likely why my weight lossstalled.

This time I am going to put more effort into learning moreabout the keto diet too.

I realize now that if I had made more adjustments to mydiet, I likely could have continued to lose weight and wouldnt haveexperienced the other benefits of keto fading.

Getting back on keto after a break isnt hard at all.

    The energy.

    The focus.
