9 Fruits You Can Actually Eat on the Keto Diet | Health

Keep in mind that, although there are plenty of keto friendly fruit options out there, consumption of fruit on the keto diet should still be limited.

Even on a modified keto diet, its recommended to aim for around 3050 grams of net carbs per day to maintain ketosis and maximize results.

Even one or two servings of these low-carb fruits can knock out a good chunk of your daily carb allotment in one shot, effectively kicking you out ketosis.

For this reason, its best to fill your plate mostly with healthy fats, protein foods and non-starchy vegetables, all of which can provide a good amount of nutrients and a low amount of carbs to help optimize your diet.

Avocados, along with other fats such as coconut oil, olive oil, ghee and grass-fed butter, can be used to boost your intake of heart-healthy and performance fats to reach ketosis. However, other higher-carb varieties such as berries, watermelon or cantaloupe should be consumed in small amounts and used as a substitute for high-sugar sweets and snacks the next time cravings strike.

Whats The Deal With Fruit On Keto Can You Eat Fruit On Keto Or Lchf

Australia is the lucky country in many ways, and the availability of fresh fruit is certainly one of them.

But what about fruit on Keto?

Surely all those vitamins and minerals are more important than the sugar right?

Growing up, fruit was like gold in our house and a fresh punnet of strawberries still makes my mouth water.

Our current government guidelines is to have 2 serves of fruit a day, for example a banana and an orange.

Put these two bad boys into your carb counting app and youve chalked yourself up over 50 grams of sugar.

We have over-domesticated and played with the genes of fruit to the point where it is so sweet and fleshy, it may as well be candy.

And when you are on keto, it basically is candy and should be treated as such.

Heres a fun tip, did you know bananas used to look like this?

Fruit was going to be my stumbling block to sticking to keto, or so I thought when I first started.

What will I do in mango season?

What will I put on my yoghurt?

And what about cheesecake? It has to have strawberries on it!

The important thing is to pick your battles!

If youve spent all day making an amazing Keto cheesecake, putting two strawberries on top isnt going to hurt.

Basically, if it fits in your daily macros, go for it.

  • Why Fruit Is So Dangerous For Keto Dieters

    Keto Fruit

Even those whove never tried following a keto meal plan know that certain foods are virtually prohibited.

Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, packaged or prepared foods with added sugar thats just part of the banned food list, and that list is a lengthy one.

Even those whove never tried the keto diet know the basic reason why those foods are banned: carbs. Sugars and starches are high in carb content, and you have to avoid eating too many carbs on keto.

Bread, pasta and packaged food can be fattening, of course, so it certainly makes sense that theyre on the list. But what makes all types of carb-heavy food even fruit such a problem?

To understand the answer, we have to talk about the bodys metabolism for a minute. Since were discussing dieting, well do this in bite-sized portions.

  • The body and brain usually get the energy they need by burning the carbohydrates we eat. That process turns carbs into the glucose that powers our metabolism.
  • Keto guidelines drastically reduce the amount of carbs we eat. That causes a big problem for the body, since no carbs means no new glucose. Once its used up any excess it may have stored, it has to find an energy source to replace glucose.
  • Theres only viable, emergency replacement for glucose: molecules called ketone bodies, or ketones for short.
  • When its carb-deprived, the body enters a metabolic state known as ketosis, which allows the liver to produce ketones and allows them to be used for energy.

20 Delicious Fruits On Keto Diet You Can Eat & Fruits To Avoid

The short answer: yes, absolutely. The longer answer is that you need to be a bit specific about which fruits to eat on keto, and of course, limit the quantity.

Remember, if youre on the keto diet, your main priority is to limit your total net carbohydrate intake to about 5-10% of your total daily calorie intake.

For the majority of people, this means eating around 30 grams of net carbohydrates per day . Intuitively, if youre eating an apple as part of your breakfast, youll be blowing past your allowable keto carb intake in a hurry.

The thing about fruits is that most of them are very dense in sugar .

For example, one cup of grapes packs a whopping 26 grams of net carbs, 23 of which are sugar. If you go portion out one cup of grapes, youll realize that its really not much food at all. Most people can put away one cup of grapes and barely even notice they ate anything.

This brings up the point that fruit is not nearly as satiating as fat or protein. Thus, if youre trying to lose weight on the keto diet, youll want to focus mainly on protein and fat to keep your appetite under control and reduce food cravings.

How Much Fruit Can You Eat On The Keto Diet

It is best to think of fruit as a supplement to your keto diet, not as a significant component. Most of your carbs, fat, protein, vitamins, and minerals should be coming from meat, seafood, high-fat dairy, low-carb vegetables, and some nuts/seeds.

By eating in this way, youll likely have 5-10 grams of net carbs to spare on a 100-gram serving of the lower carb sweet fruits, such as raspberries, strawberries, starfruit, and watermelon, without preventing ketosis.

That being said, the two lowest carb fruits, avocado and tomato, can be eaten a bit more liberally on keto. Many keto dieters, for example, have added a whole avocado into their daily diet without any issues.

To learn exactly how much fruit you can eat without slowing your keto progress, use our keto macro calculator. This way, you can customize the serving sizes based on your specific carb limit.

Fat is where the bulk of your intake comes into play. Yes, it may get a bad rap, but it’s actually an essential macronutrient that’s used as a fuel source for building cell membranes, absorbing vitamins, and minerals, and other bodily processes. A higher-fat diet has also been shown to reduce cravings , but just make sure you’re going with full-fat foods rather than those with trans-fats and overly processed polyunsaturated fats.

Instead of stressing over the dietary cholesterol content, focus on consuming a higher ratio of unsaturated fats to saturated fats . “There’s a misconception that keto is all bacon, butter, and cheese and while some people take that approach, it’s not the only way,” Shoemaker says. “While the diet is high fat, if your goal is weight loss, then it’s important to moderate your fat intake so that your body can burn your stored body fat.”

Since you’re consuming a vast majority of calories from fat, it’s crucial to focus on fueling up with options that are less likely to clog your arteries and less likely to increase your cancer risk. “Focus on filling meals that contain a balance of protein, non-starchy vegetables, and healthy fat sources like nuts and seeds, olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, or avocado,” Shoemaker adds.

Can I Eat Fruit Once I Lose the Weight on Keto?

The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein and very-low-carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrates are the bodys preferred source of energy, but on a strict ketogenic diet, less than 5% of energy intake is from carbohydrates . The reduction of carbohydrates puts the body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Ketosis is when the body starts breaking down stored fat into molecules called ketone bodies to use for energy, in the absence of circulating blood sugar from food. Once the body reaches ketosis, most cells will use ketone bodies to generate energy until you start eating carbohydrates again.

Traditionally, the ketogenic diet was only used in clinical settings to reduce seizures in children with epilepsy. Now there is a lot of interest in the diets effectiveness in helping with other neurological conditions, cancer, diabetes, PCOS , obesity, high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease, says Emily Stone, M.S., RD. People also eat keto to lose weight .

Even if you know that you need to eat a very-low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein diet, it can be confusing to know which foods to eat. Heres our guide to foods you can eat, foods you should avoid and foods you can sometimes have when youre following a ketogenic diet.
