This is one of the areas that I discuss really early on with my coaching clients because I have found time and time again that people whose social lives revolve around drinking quite heavily are unlikely to succeed on a ketogenic diet unless they address this part of their lives.

So of course if youre trying to lose weight and are struggling to do so while drinking alcohol then you may wish to abstain from alcohol.

Whilst many people do ketogenic diets for weight loss that there are also many people who are doing it to reverse the effects the metabolic syndrome, such as type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.

Can I Drink Alcohol On The Ketogenic Diet

Even though the dietary guidelines of the USDA allow the consumption of alcohol in moderation, the fact is that even if you consume pure alcohol without any carbohydrates added, it still has to be broken down by the body, it causes dehydration and depletes the body of vitamins. Consuming alcohol leads to a fatty liver. It is toxic to the liver, kills cells in the liver and in the brain. Complications of having a fatty liver includes inflammation.

So as long as you are comfortable with the above listed effects of alcohol on the body, you may consume it on keto as long as the total carbohydrate content of drink is within your daily maximum recommended carb intake.

Fat is a large molecule that breaks down slowly in the digestive system, which is one of the reasons itâs so satiating when compared to carbohydrates .

The theory is that the food you eat digests at the rate of the slowest digesting molecules, so when you pair a snack thatâs high in carbs with a quality fat source like MCT or coconut oil, nut butter, avocado, butter or cheese, those carbs will be slower to hit your bloodstream, and therefore the impact will be minimized.

Weâre not suggesting you have keto coffee and Baileyâs . This also doesnât mean you can drink a margarita and take a shot of MCT oil and call it even.

Let’s say that 5% of your daily caloric intake in carbs equates to 30g. If you stick to high-fat, extremely low carb foods during the day and limit your daytime intake to 5g, then come happy hour, that’s 25g of carbs you can theoretically consume without kicking yourself out of ketosis.

What We Learned On Our Hunt For Keto Wines

    Alcohol metabolism occurs in the liver and so does ketone production. And yes alcohol absolutely affects ketone production.

    One of the core aims of eating a ketogenic diet is to keep the levels of insulin low to reduce the storage of fat.

    Most hormones in the body have an opposite hormone and insulin is no different. Insulins opposite hormone is glucagon.

    While insulin is produced in response to high blood glucose levels.glucagon is produced in response to low blood glucose

    Firstly, to break down those glycogen stores we mentioned earlier, to use as blood glucose and if there is no glycogen left, the liver will produce ketones from stored body fat!

    So being in ketosis is low insulin, high glucagon state.

    But whats this got to do with alcohol. Well, alcohol consumption reduces glucagon levels reducing, or stopping the production of ketones.

    This makes sense your body has all of a sudden found a new energy source alcohol is an energy source therefore it doesnt need to keep breaking down fat for energy.

    Does Alcohol On Keto Offer Any Health Benefits

    Though there havent been any studies exploring the possible benefits of drinking alcohol on keto, there is evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol may offer some health benefits to some people.
