What Wines Are Keto Friendly
Dry wines tend to contain far less carbohydrates and sugars than other, sweeter wines, and can be keto-friendly when consumed in moderation. Some of the best wines for keto diets include:
- Sauvignon Blanc
DrinkWell also stocks a range of zero carb wines perfect for a keto diet, such as Piattini Pinot Grigio, Rose 500 and Guillaume Aurele Viognier. Check out our Keto Wines page to view our full range.
Sweet dessert wines such as port are unsuitable for a keto diet, as they can contain up to around 20g of carbohydrates per glass. Similarly, full-bodied red wines are equally unsuitable due to a high carb content. This includes varieties such as Malbec, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel, and can contain around 5-6g of carbohydrates per glass.
Whilst many wine labels dont explicitly state their carbohydrate content, there are a few indicators you can look out for on a keto diet. Avoid terms such as dessert wine, fortified wine, late-harvest, doux, and ice wine.

Alcohol = Bad Decisions
Finally, when it comes to thinking about alcohol and weight loss we have to consider the effect that alcohol has on our decision-making abilities. Especially when we have a lower tolerance to alcohol because were in ketosis.
Where will that one low carb drink lead to?
Will you find yourself waking up a 4 oclock in the morning still drunk from the night before with your face covered in the pizza that you passed out in!
You know yourself better than anyone and so all I ask you to do is be honest with yourself are you someone who can do alcohol in moderation?
This is one of the areas that I discuss really early on with my coaching clients because I have found time and time again that people whose social lives revolve around drinking quite heavily are unlikely to succeed on a ketogenic diet unless they address this part of their lives.
So of course if youre trying to lose weight and are struggling to do so while drinking alcohol then you may wish to abstain from alcohol.
Whilst many people do ketogenic diets for weight loss that there are also many people who are doing it to reverse the effects the metabolic syndrome, such as type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease.

Can I Drink Alcohol On The Ketogenic Diet
Even though the dietary guidelines of the USDA allow the consumption of alcohol in moderation, the fact is that even if you consume pure alcohol without any carbohydrates added, it still has to be broken down by the body, it causes dehydration and depletes the body of vitamins. Consuming alcohol leads to a fatty liver. It is toxic to the liver, kills cells in the liver and in the brain. Complications of having a fatty liver includes inflammation.
So as long as you are comfortable with the above listed effects of alcohol on the body, you may consume it on keto as long as the total carbohydrate content of drink is within your daily maximum recommended carb intake.
Keto Drinking Tip #: Pair Your Drinks With Fat
Fat is a large molecule that breaks down slowly in the digestive system, which is one of the reasons itâs so satiating when compared to carbohydrates .
The theory is that the food you eat digests at the rate of the slowest digesting molecules, so when you pair a snack thatâs high in carbs with a quality fat source like MCT or coconut oil, nut butter, avocado, butter or cheese, those carbs will be slower to hit your bloodstream, and therefore the impact will be minimized.
Weâre not suggesting you have keto coffee and Baileyâs . This also doesnât mean you can drink a margarita and take a shot of MCT oil and call it even.
But if youâre looking to minimize your blood glucose impact and maintain the progress youâve made on keto, ensuring your dinner meal or happy hour keto snacks are high in fat and extremely low in carbs is a good move.

Keto Drinking Tip #: Bank Your Carbohydrates
Let’s say that 5% of your daily caloric intake in carbs equates to 30g. If you stick to high-fat, extremely low carb foods during the day and limit your daytime intake to 5g, then come happy hour, that’s 25g of carbs you can theoretically consume without kicking yourself out of ketosis.
That could mean a low-carb dinner worth 10g of carbs, plus:
- 5 glasses of Budweiser Select 55
- 8 glasses of Champagne
- A lot of Dry Martinis

Is Keto Bad For Your Liver
Individuals with a normal, healthy, functioning liver will not be harmed by modest nutritional ketosis. However, the keto diet still raises a threat of having hyperlipidemia which is the condition where fat or lipids in the blood elevate and the liver enzymes. The keto diet is low in carbohydrates but high in fat.
Alcohol Can Slow Down Fat Burning
Studies show that heavy drinking can block fat burning and hinder weight loss.
Thats because when you drink alcohol, your body metabolizes it before other nutrients to use it as fuel .
This can slow down fat burning and cause extra carbs, protein and fat in your diet to be stored as fat tissue, resulting in excess body fat .
Heavy alcohol consumption can also decrease fat breakdown and increase fatty acid synthesis, leading to the accumulation of triglycerides in your liver. Over time, this causes a condition called fatty liver disease .
Not only can this have detrimental effects on your waistline but also serious consequences when it comes to your health.
Alcohol is prioritized over other nutrients for metabolism in your body. It can slow down fat burning and increase fat storage.
On the other hand, excessive amounts of alcohol have consistently been tied to weight gain in observational studies.
One study in 49,324 women found that heavy drinkers consuming at least two drinks per day had increased odds of weight gain compared to non-drinkers .
Another study in nearly 15,000 men showed that increased alcohol consumption was associated with a higher risk of weight gain over a 24-year period .
Therefore, regardless of whether youre on a low-carb diet or not, its best to drink alcohol in moderation, which is defined as one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men .

Can Alcohol Throw You Out Of Ketosis
No, alcohol itself will not kick you out of ketosis. However, alcohol de-prioritizes utilization of fat to make ketones.
Here is the difference in metabolism on normal keto versus when you drink alcoholic beverages on keto:
- When you follow a keto diet, your body burns fat for fuel and produces ketones.
- When you drink alcohol on keto, your body sees the alcohol as poison and its first priority is to get rid of it . So, your body stops breaking down both sugar and fat in order to break down the alcohol instead. That means that any excess sugar or fat is more prone to get stored, in the form of glycogen in the liver and primarily body fat.
What Alcohol To Avoid On Keto
Keto alcohol to avoid includes mixed drinks, anything with soda, tonic water, or juice, sweet wines, liqueurs, hard ciders, wine coolers, and sangrias. Basically, the goal is to avoid sugar. Below youll find more details on each of these NOT keto friendly alcohol drinks.
- Most mixed drinks Anything with simple syrup, agave, margarita mix, sweet & sour mix, vermouth, bitters, ginger beer, etc. Most mixed drinks will fall into this category.
- Drinks with soda, tonic water, or juice Including regular cola or lemon-lime soda, tonic water, ginger ale, orange juice, cranberry juice, etc.
- Sweet wines Such as riesling, moscato, port, sherry, dessert wines, etc.
- Liqueurs Including triple sec, amaretto, cointreau, kahlua, and others. These are loaded with sugar and typically made with some kind of syrup.
- Hard ciders or wine coolers These are essentially spiked fruit juice.
- Sangrias The wine in them is usually fine, but the added fruit, sugar, and/or juice is not.

Reduced Alcohol Tolerance And Hangovers
Have you ever heard the advice to not drink on an empty stomach, or to eat starchy carbs before an evening of drinking?
Eating a carb-heavy meal before drinking can keep you from getting drunk too quickly. By the same logic, following a strict keto diet can lead to becoming intoxicated more quickly and suffering a worse hangover.
On the keto diet, you may feel drunker, faster. Without the carbs and glycogen stores, the alcohol hits your system faster and stronger. When on a keto diet, most people need significantly less alcohol to get intoxicated.
Some people also experience a worse hangover on the keto diet. To avoid this, make sure to stay hydrated. Make sure to drink plenty of water at least one large glass of water for each alcoholic drink you consume.
The Downsides Of Wine On Keto
Even though wine can bring health benefits, you wont lose weight or flatter your health if you consume it excessively.
Therefore, according to studies, the best health benefit is obtained with a glass of red wine a day .
In contrast, too much alcohol increases the risk of heart failure, cancer, liver disease, and mortality in general.
In addition, there are other disadvantages of alcohol consumption in ketogenic diets:
- Although there are no studies about it, you tend to get drunk faster on the keto diet, which you should not underestimate.
- Since the liver preferentially takes care of breaking down alcohol, this can inhibit ketone production and weight loss .
- Its no secret that a large appetite usually follows increased alcohol consumption. The more you drink, the more likely you are to overeat afterward.
Finally, science gives us the ideal amount of alcohol per day, about 90 ml of wine for women and about 180 ml for men .
Indeed, you do not have to drink wine every day. However, now and then, 1-2 glasses of the right wine are allowed even on the keto diet.

Will Alcohol Affect Ketosis
Alcohol metabolism occurs in the liver and so does ketone production. And yes alcohol absolutely affects ketone production.
One of the core aims of eating a ketogenic diet is to keep the levels of insulin low to reduce the storage of fat.
Most hormones in the body have an opposite hormone and insulin is no different. Insulins opposite hormone is glucagon.
While insulin is produced in response to high blood glucose levels.glucagon is produced in response to low blood glucose
Firstly, to break down those glycogen stores we mentioned earlier, to use as blood glucose and if there is no glycogen left, the liver will produce ketones from stored body fat!
So being in ketosis is low insulin, high glucagon state.
But whats this got to do with alcohol. Well, alcohol consumption reduces glucagon levels reducing, or stopping the production of ketones.
This makes sense your body has all of a sudden found a new energy source alcohol is an energy source therefore it doesnt need to keep breaking down fat for energy.
Does Alcohol On Keto Offer Any Health Benefits
Though there havent been any studies exploring the possible benefits of drinking alcohol on keto, there is evidence that moderate consumption of alcohol may offer some health benefits to some people.
Studies show that for women, moderate alcohol consumption can lower fasting insulin and glycemic levels, especially if consumed in the evening. These studies also tell us that moderate alcohol consumption does not lead to an increase in blood sugar for both men and women.
A 2006 study found that women drinking red wine at least once per week were 16% less likely to get diabetes than women who drank less regularly.
These outcomes occur because the liver prioritizes the metabolism of alcohol over complex carbs into blood sugar. So when on a low-carb, no-sugar keto diet, these effects are questionable.
However, It should also be noted that the alcohol-diabetes link has a serious limit. A 2009 study found that consuming more than 4 glasses of beer or wine per day for women and 4.5 for men, doubled the risk of type 2 diabetes.
