Why Are Sweeteners Needed On Keto
When starting the keto diet, it can take some time to get your macros right to ensure ongoing ketosis. Although keto offers rapid initial weight loss, it is not a crash diet. Keto is a lifestyle choice, and it is important to see it as a long term dietary change right from the start.Although it is possible to cut out sweet snacks and desserts for a couple of weeks, most people will find their willpower severely tested beyond this point. It is unrealistic to expect to cut out sweet treats forever. Knowing that you can indulge in the occasional keto-friendly indulgence now and again may help to keep you going with keto.
As you get used to a keto lifestyle, your taste buds are likely to change. A few raspberries in some natural yoghurt may seem far sweeter than they did when you were eating refined sugar every day. However, realistically fruit is a poor substitute for cake or ice cream, and having a few keto-friendly options tucked up your sleeve for celebrations is part of enjoying life to the full.Keto sweeteners are naturally derived substances that taste sweet but are low in carbs and sugar. These sweeteners are often found in plants or fruits which can help to avoid the risks associated with artificial sweeteners.

Humans are hard wired for sugar. Fruit, pastries, soda pop it starts when sugar molecules bind to taste receptors on your tongue. Then, theres a sense of pleasure, as your brain lights up with a flood of dopamine and serotonin. And, for the moment, sugar is amazing.
But, heres the kicker. Eventually that sugar rush comes crashing down, contributing to cavities, obesity, and diabetes. Yet, still you crave the sweet stuff.
The problem is that we have an evolutionary mismatch.
Which Sweeteners Are Best For Diabetics
There are a few considerations when choosing a sweetener for people with diabetes. The most important factor is choosing a low glycemic index sweetener which doesnt cause blood sugar spikes.
The American Diabetes Association recommends using sweeteners like Sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin in moderation. Stevia is also a good choice because it has a very low GI and doesnt raise blood sugar levels.

Chicory Root & Inulin Sweetener
Chicory root is the root of the Belgian endive plant and has long been used as a coffee substitute. It contains soluble fibers called inulin and fructooligosaccharides , both of which are responsible for sweetening . Inulin and oligosaccharides are also found in other plants, but are most concentrated in chicory root.
Is Chicory Root Keto?
Inulin is a carbohydrate that human digestive enzymes cannot break down. Since we cannot digest it, it is a low carb keto sweetener and has zero net carbs.

Side Effects Of Sugar Alcohols:
Because sugar alcohols are not absorbed well, they can cause stomach upset, bloating, or diarrhea. Their impact on blood sugar and potential for side effects varies depending on the type of sugar alcohol.
- Erythritol Although its in the sugar alcohol family, erythritol does not raise blood glucose like some polyols do . It is also less likely to cause gastrointestinal distress, because most of it gets absorbed in the small intestine and is later excreted unchanged into the urine. All other sugar alcohols reach the large intestine instead, which is why they are more likely to cause stomach upset. Still, erythritol can cause stomach issues for some people. Erythritol can also create a cooling aftertaste in cooking and baking.
- Xylitol Unlike erythritol, xylitol does not get absorbed in the small intestine. Instead, it proceeds to the large intestine, and the reaction between the natural bacteria there and the xylitol is what can cause distress. How much varies from person to person. People with dogs in the house may want to avoid keeping xylitol around, because even a small accidentally ingested amount can be lethal for a dog .

Whats The Best Sweetener For Keto Diet
For me, the best sweetener for the Keto Diet is stevia. Ive found that stevia doesnt cause digestive distress when I use a pure form that does not contain inflammatory items like corn, erythritol, and other highly processed ingredients that are difficult to digest.
My keto recipes using stevia, are a hit with family, friends, and fans, and youll find several of them below!
What Is Allulose Sweetener
Allulose is a natural sugar that we cant metabolize , which means it tastes and acts like sugar without spiking our blood sugar. Found in fruit, maple syrup and other plants, its 70% as sweet as sugar.
The name allulose sounds like glucose, fructose, lactose, and other sugar names, because its in the same family. But unlike these sugars, we cant process allulose, which means it has zero calories and zero net carbs.
Allulose is newer and gaining popularity for its incredible ability to dissolve, brown, and caramelize just like sugar does.

Stevia Vs Monk Fruit In Review
So far the benefits of these sweeteners are pretty equal, however it seems there is more science behind stevia and its components. It may very well be that you can use a mixture of these sweeteners or pick one depending on your taste preferences. There are a few final things to consider that may sway you to buy one over the other:
My Conclusion On Sugar Alcohols And Keto
If youve followed my dessert recipes you see that I use Truvia and Swerve for baking more than any other keto sweetener. Aside from the fact that it provides almost zero calories and is virtually carb-free, I love the sugar-like consistency that it gives for baking.
Keep in mind, though, that Truvia only has 70% of the sweetness of sugar and some people may notice a cooling sensation on the tongue with it. Overall, I think sugar alcohols are the best option for keto baking.

Why Is It Hard To Give Up Sugar
It may take some time to readjust your taste buds to living sugar-free, and is it any wonder? Sugar is now found in 80% of products on our supermarket shelves.
What is astounding is the type of foods that have added sugar. You might expect it to be in desserts, granola, and cereals but tuna? Soup? Bacon? There are also several different names of sugar which just makes it even more confusing when you’re trying to understand reading food labels.
But the real problem is how sugar affects the brain and how it lights up our reward center. As we eat more, we become accustomed to the reward and so seek more.
But by replacing sugar with delicious low-carb sweet treats, you can help reduce your cravings.
Is Sucralose Keto Friendly
Studies have shown that sucralose does not affect blood glucose or ketosis so technically, it is keto-friendly.
But that does not mean that you should include it in your keto diet, especially if you want to stay natural.
Research states that at high heat, sucralose becomes unstable and produces hydrocarbons. Evidence suggests hydrocarbons are cancerous.
So at least do not cook or bake with sucralose as a low-carb sweetener at high heat.
Sucralose is an artificial sweetener, so we tend to avoid it, especially when there are so many natural alternatives.

My Conclusion On Natural Keto Sweeteners
Both Stevia and Monk Fruit have a glycemic index of 0, which means they should not affect your blood sugar at all. However, some forms of less expensive Stevia are mixed with other sweeteners or bulking agents . These could have an impact on your blood sugar levels. Note that Stevia packets, such as Stevia in the Raw, typically contain carb-ridden fillers like dextrose.
Some people think Stevia has an aftertaste but the liquid drops seem to have less of this. I wouldnt use Stevia in chocolate recipes as many people get a severe and rather awful delayed flavor impression .
So no hot chocolate, and no keto brownies with Stevia. Monk fruit, while a good keto option is harder to find and has to be mixed with other sweeteners for baking so its not at the top of my list.
What Is Monk Fruit
- Monk fruit is an excellent sugar substitute for keto, paleo, and other low-carb baking recipes.
- Monk fruit is 200 times sweeter than sugar, so you require very little when cooking.
- Monk fruit is no carb and does not spike insulin.
- Monk fruit is generally free of side effects.
- Theres some suggestion that monk fruit may have anti-inflammatory benefits.

Cut Net Carbs And Calories With These Great
When you embark on a keto diet, you must bid farewell to sugar. Sugar isnt a keto-friendly sweetener.
But giving up sugar can be tough, especially if you have a sweet tooth. How will you make Grandmas famous chocolate chip cookies now?
Dont worry, you have options. Allulose, monk fruit, stevia, and erythritol are all keto sweeteners that taste and bake like sugar, without the negative health impacts.
In fact, these low-carb sweeteners have health benefits. Youll feel good about eating your keto cookie.
Well cover allulose and the rest of the sweet keto gang in a moment. First, lets talk about what theyre replacing.
Avoid These Sweeteners For Diabetics & Keto:
- Refined Sugars Such as white table sugar or brown sugar. Most people know this part.
- Natural Sugars Coconut sugar and date sugar.
- Liquid Sweeteners That Contain Sugar Maple syrup, honey, rice syrup, agave syrup, corn syrup, and blackstrap molasses .
- Artificial Sweeteners These will not spike blood sugar, but they are not recommended for the other reasons described in the Artificial Sweeteners & Why To Avoid Them section above.
Even though some people consider these healthy sweeteners and they may contain nutritive qualities, they are all simple sugars from a chemistry standpoint. While the ratios between glucose and fructose can vary, they will all spike blood sugar.

Which Sweeteners Should I Use On Keto
The limitations on sugar and sweet treats can feel overwhelming when you start keto. Refined sugar is not recommended for keto. This is because giving the body a supply of glucose from the foods you eat prevents ketosis from occurring.Because carbs are broken down into glucose in the digestive system, savoury carbohydrates are also off-limits. Eating carbs prevents a ketonic state from occurring, because glucose enters the bloodstream resulting in the liver stopping its production of ketone bodies.Even though you know the science behind keto, when youre craving something sweet it takes a lot of willpower not to break your keto diet. Luckily, low carbohydrate, sugar free, natural keto sweeteners could offer you a solution. However, it is important to recognise the difference between natural and artificial sweeteners.

Artificial And Natural Coffee Sweeteners Compared
Now that you know what a sweetener is lets discuss the differences between artificial and natural coffee sweeteners.
Artificial Sweeteners: An artificial coffee sweetener is a food additive that replaces sugar in coffee and other beverages. It is made from chemicals that taste like sugar but contain few or no calories.
Natural Sweeteners: A natural coffee sweetener is derived from a natural source. Natural sweeteners can be derived from plants, such as Stevia, or they can be derived from animals, such as honey.
Lets compare their differences in more detail:
So Which Sweetener Is Best For Keto
I think Natural Sweeteners like Stevia and Monk Fruit are great for sweetening your coffee or tea, but not great for baking.
My favorite alternative sweeteners for baking are Swerve and Truvia. I do sometimes use a little packet of Splenda in sauces. I think artificial sweeteners should be avoided.

Should You Use Sweeteners On Keto
When it comes to using Keto-friendly sweeteners, theres no right or wrong answer – youll find valid arguments on both sides.
One major plus of certain sweeteners on Keto is that they can satisfy sugar cravings without necessarily impacting blood sugar or kicking you out of ketosis. Theoretically, enjoying the occasional low-carb dessert may mean the diet feels less restrictive, which may make it easier to follow for a longer time period. You get to have your Keto cake and eat it too.
However, any sweet taste, whether it’s from pure sugar or a sweetener, is thought to activate the same reward pathways and dopamine release in the brain. This may contribute towards continued sugar cravings and addictions in some individuals, although this may not be the case for everyone.
Ultimately, it comes down to individual preference and tolerance.
Some people can enjoy the occasional Keto treat and maintain a balanced diet. Others may prefer to steer clear entirely as it removes the temptation of just one Keto cookie turning into the whole jar…
